It depends on the steel wool. If you have 0000 steel wool is finer than grit 600th I finished a lot of furniture and I like steel wool before applying the last layer 0000. But it's just me. You can use a stamp and a little furniture polish after it gets wet.

Helmsman Spar Urethane (brightness, uncoated) would be a good option. Wet-sand between coats with white spirit and 600 K (or higher) sandpaper. For a good gloss, you must put your hair in soft powder coating of paint and let it heal for free. Do not sand the final layer.

My father is always great in the woods and I help her. Steel wool is still used to take the blows. You not only have a little bit difficult, as you can see and feel the difference.

One of the best things to use is crumpled brown paper bag ....& it's free.
It is not much reason to believe that even the best sandpaper, steel wool or bronze.
If the layer of fine finish, dry, with a high gloss.
Best regards
